What: Advanced Wilderness Life Support
Advanced Wilderness Life Support® (AWLS) is a medical certification course that provides a practical foundation in Wilderness Medicine for medical professionals. The course is a 2.5-day course that teaches patient assessment and treatment guidelines enabling them to prevent and effectively manage emergency medical situations outside traditional medical facilities until definitive care or evacuation is available, and trains the provider in methods to manage medical and trauma emergencies and urgencies in the wilderness when evacuation is unavailable or unnecessary. The course is equally divided between didactic lecture and hands-on teaching. The AWLS certification is appropriate for any licensed medical professional, or medical professional in training, who has an interest in wilderness activities.
The mission of AWLS is to create competence in medical professionals, enabling them to prevent and effectively manage emergency medical situations outside traditional medical facilities.
The AWLS certification is appropriate for any licensed medical professional, or medical professional in training, who has an interest in wilderness activities. Graduates include outdoor enthusiasts, expedition participants, US Army and other military medical personnel, wilderness medicine academicians and Wilderness Medical Society Fellowship candidates.
AWLS is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits through the Wilderness Medical Society. The AWLS program is also approved by ACEP, AAFP and AAPA. Other medical professionals please check with your governing entity to determine the usefulness of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.

Hotel/Eating: There are an abundance of places to stay in Peniche (home of the Rip Curl Pro) from B&B’s to the MH Hotel in the heart of Peniche. While there is world class surfing, there are also lots of amazing local restaurants serving up traditional Portuguese dishes from the sea. Tasca do Joel and Nau dos Corvus are among the best, but better not leave without trying the local clams (Ameijoas a Bulhao Pato) and fresh grilled octopus at Taberna do Ganhao in nearby Baleal!
About the Area: – A small fishing town turned surfing destination. It’s the site of World Surf League and Ripcurl Pro competitions each year.
The weather is pretty good in May. Generally 60’s. The swell is variable between ground and wind swell, winds are generally from the north but being in the Peniche area you are always a short ride away from a better swell depending on the wind. Peniche offers multiple easy access breaks. In Peniche there is mohle leste, supertubos, consolacao. Cerro. A short drive north takes you to lagide and baleal and depending on your adventure level belgas and foz do arehlo and nazare.
Water temp is generally requires a 3/2 at that time and depending on cold tolerance booties.
