How To Reserve: Steps in this order:

  1. Ensure that you have paid your SMA membership fees (100 for medical/25 for non-medical) on this site-this trip is open to members of SMA *Must be a SMA member to join
  2. Pay conference fee on this website $515
  3. Contact Brian Sturgill: Brian.sturgill@yahoo.com and cc. SmaCentral@yahoo.com, screenshot your conference fee and membership fee receipts. Brian will confirm that you have paid your fees and reserve your spot
  4. Confirm and pay with Waterways Travel
As far as volunteering/serving in the local villages–we’ll wait to get more information as this comes available.  Thank you all who have reached out specifically about the humanitarian portion of the trip–we will find some way to contribute.  At the very least, I’m hoping that we can still bring medical equipment/medications/hygiene supplies/clothing/etc to donate.  Unsure about what kind of interactions will be permissible with local villages.
Below is a portion of the email I received from Waterways Travel.  (These rules are subject to change)

We are optimistic that the resort will resume operations and full guest services in December 2021.   The first week we expect to operate is Dec 4-11, 2021.

The resort is working closely with the Fijian Government thru Care Fiji Committed (CFC), the Ministry of Health and the Fiji Hotel Association to navigate the new entry requirements for operating resorts.   Tavarua Island Resort and Waterways are aware of the new rules but we are also seeking clarification on some ‘what if’ scenarios to be sure all of our guests are as prepared as possible for these new logistics.

We also understand these rules will probably change over time.

Some of the most important new entry requirements that we are sure of are listed below:

•             All visitors to Fiji that are 18+ yrs old must show proof of vaccination

•             All visitors are required to provide a negative PCR test taken 3 days before departure.

•             There will be another test administered in Fiji at your resort approximately 2 days after arrival

•             Depending on your country of origin, you may or may not be required to take another test to return home.

•             Costs and testing procedures TBD

Event Description:

Why: The SMA was born on Tavarua, having held our first organizational meeting there in the mid-80’s, the first years that Tavi was open. Every year since, we’ve met there for our annual gathering.

The SMA trip is a great mix of outstanding surf, world class lodging and food, superb family environs with activities for all (swimming pool and gorgeous natural hot tub, SUPs, diving, unbelievable fishing, village trips), medical and social interest talks in the evenings, and medical clinics in the villages. With over 30 years of experience, this trip allows us to find the absolute best of Fiji, including sharing in the lives of Fijians we’ve watched grow up. The village trips will deeply impress you with what wonderful caring people the Fijians are. Then there are those barrels at Cloudbreak….

Who goes on the trip? A wonderful mix of individuals, couples, and families all sharing an interest in the waves, culture, and medical well-being of Fiji. Most, but not all, of those who come have medical training and practice.

What does it cost? The SMA charges a conference fee of $500 (plus paypal fee). We use the fees to not only support SMA activities, but also for scholarships for Fijian villagers, projects in the villages, medical supplies, medications and to support the Christmas fund for Tavarua employees. Note that the conference fee is payable by all adults, medical and non-medical, surfer and non-surfer alike.
